Elijah Kitaka’s journey in music began behind the drums long before he stepped forward as a recording artist. Now a singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, the Ugandan musician brings the rhythmic instincts of a seasoned instrumentalist into songs shaped by soulful melodies, African influences and his own experimental approach to sound.
Born Elijah Nsubuga and raised in a musical family, Kitaka started playing drums in church as a child and developed his skills through school choirs and live performances. He later became a professional drummer, performing with groups such as Janzi Band and Qwela Band and working alongside established Ugandan artists including Maurice Kirya, Kaz Kasozi, A Pass, Cindy and Lilian Mbabazi. His work as an instrumentalist also took him to major African music festivals, giving him experience across different sounds and performance environments.
Although drums were his first instrument, Kitaka had been writing and singing for years before stepping forward as a vocalist. His early project, “Son of Kalooli,” released in 2020, marked the beginning of his journey as a recording artist. He gradually moved from supporting other musicians to developing a sound of his own, combining the musicianship he had gained as a drummer with songwriting and production.
His career took a significant step forward when he joined Swangz Avenue as the label’s first male artist signing. Working with the label gave him a larger platform and helped introduce his music to a wider audience. His releases, including “Tutu Mama,” “Weather for 2,” “Kontrol” and “Dawa,” established him as an artist with a distinctive approach to contemporary Ugandan music.
“Dawa” became a defining moment in Kitaka’s rise. The song grew into one of his most recognised recordings and earned him Song of the Year at the 2025 Zzina Awards. His growing profile has also extended beyond music, with Kitaka winning Tech Influencer of the Year at the 2024 Pulse Uganda Influencer Awards.
Kitaka’s creativity also extends into fashion. His distinctive style and willingness to experiment with his appearance earned him the Most Stylish Male Artist of the Year (Uganda) honour at the 2025 Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards.
From church drums to international stages, Elijah Kitaka has built his career around musicianship, experimentation and a strong connection to African sounds. His evolution from a sought-after drummer into a singer, producer and award-winning solo artist reflects a broad creative identity that continues to grow within Uganda’s music scene.
