Journey
Ambrose Akula Akwabi, known as Dunga, is a Kenyan producer and sound engineer who transformed the East African music landscape. After moving to Tanzania, he established Mandugu Digital and pioneered "The Bounce," a production style that replaced generic loops with high-fidelity, syncopated rhythms, redefining Bongo Flava and Kenyan urban music.
Dunga’s career is built on elite collaborations. He produced foundational hits such as Matonya’s "Anita," Mangwair’s "Nipeni Dealie," and Joh Makini’s "Manouva." His engineering expertise is featured on tracks by Lady Jaydee, Mr. Blue, and TMK Wanaume. As a performer, his gravelly vocal hooks and melodic chants became his signature, most notably on the hits "Sijutii" (with Joh Makini) and "Baki Na Mimi."
Currently, Dunga operates within the Umoja Sounds collective and serves as a consultant for OngalaVerse, focusing on live music and mentorship. Recent credits include the CRDB Bank Marathon Anthem, the DSTV "Zigo" campaign, and Jay Rox’s 2024–2025 projects. By merging technical engineering with African musical heritage, Dunga remains a cornerstone for the next generation of creators.
