Don Luciano, whose real name is Lucky Phalane, is a celebrated South African house and Amapiano vocalist, songwriter, and choir director. Deeply rooted in the vibrant Pretoria music scene, he has built a stellar reputation for delivering rich, soulful melodies over electronic, Afro-house, and Amapiano rhythms.
Phalane’s musical journey began during the 1990s in his hometown of Soshanguve, where he joined a local church choir. He quickly advanced to become the worship team leader and youth choir trainer.
To hone his technical abilities, he joined a school choir to study advanced vocal control, breathing techniques, and classical choral dynamics. He later moved to England, immersing himself in the UK's live church music scene to master complex vocal arrangements.
His secular breakthrough came in 2003 when he won a prestigious national karaoke contest in the UK.
Returning to South Africa, Don Luciano channeled his classical training into the commercial dance music sector. His ability to craft uplifting, powerful hooks made him a highly sought-after collaborator for Pretoria’s elite producers. He achieved significant streaming success with the hit "Motho Shuule," working alongside Junior Taurus and the late DJ Sumbody. His extensive portfolio also includes the hit "Mafifing" with DJ Fortee, and collaborations with the band Afrikan Roots.
Don Luciano’s talent has also resonated globally; his single "Dreams" was picked up by international icon Anané Vega for worldwide distribution. Today, he remains a vital force in the African electronic music landscape, recently releasing the track "Solah" alongside the Dvine Brothers.
