Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, internationally recognized as Doja Cat, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer whose versatility has established her among the most commercially successful artists of her generation. Born in Los Angeles to South African actor Dumisani Dlamini and American painter Deborah Sawyer, she spent portions of her childhood in California and New York. Her early interests included ballet, tap, jazz, breakdancing, and piano, while exposure to hip-hop, R&B, electronic music, and alternative rock shaped her musical direction. She eventually left high school to pursue music independently, teaching herself recording and production before uploading songs to SoundCloud as a teenager.
