Journey
Djakata was a South African musical group that emerged during the mid-1990s, a transformative era for the country’s urban music scene. They are best known for their 1995 release, "Phenduka," a track that blended the infectious rhythms of Bubblegum pop with the high-energy spirit of Pantsula culture. Released through the legendary Gallo Record Company (now preserved under Sony Music’s Reamusic), the "Phenduka" EP showcased a sound designed for the townships, characterized by heavy synthesizers, electronic percussion, and catchy, repetitive vocal hooks.
The group’s music captured the celebratory mood of post-Apartheid South Africa. While "Phenduka" remains their most enduring contribution, the EP also featured tracks like "Come On Everybody" and "Zishangani Mapansula," further cementing their ties to the street-dance movements of the time. Today, Djakata is remembered as a vibrant part of the sonic bridge between the 80s disco-soul era and the early rise of Kwaito.
