Damian Soul, born Damian Innocent Mihayo in Sinza, Dar es Salaam, is a Tanzanian singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His love for music was shaped by his family, with his parents’ varied tastes and his uncle’s passion for hip-hop sparking his interest in writing songs. While studying in Uganda, he co-founded a gospel group and later directed a church choir during holidays back home. He later pursued formal training at Music May Day in Dar es Salaam, which helped refine his craft.
He began his professional career in 2011 with the single “Hakuna Matata,” followed by “Taratibu” in 2012. Over the years, he has built a reputation for incorporating Afro Soul, Jazz, R&B, and bongo fusion into a style that feels both modern and rooted in Tanzanian culture. His collaborations with artists such as Joh Makini, Vanessa Mdee, G Nako, Nikki wa Pili, and Quickrocker have produced standout tracks like “Ni Penzi,” “Kaumba,” “Tudumishe,” and “Data.” Ni Penzi earned him a nomination for Best R&B Song at the 2015 Tanzania Music Awards, a key moment in his career.
Damian Soul is recognized for his warm voice and his ability to combine traditional rhythms with contemporary influences. His more recent songs, including “Fire Fire,” “Be My Baby,” “Mapopo,” and “Siri,” show his growth as an artist while staying true to his soulful foundation.
