Damian Robert Nesta Marley, known worldwide as Damian Marley and by the nickname Jr. Gong, is a Jamaican reggae, dancehall, reggae fusion, and hip-hop artist. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, as the youngest son of reggae icon Bob Marley and former Miss World Cindy Breakspeare, Marley carries a musical legacy that he has built into a substantial body of work on its own terms. His instrument of choice is the deejay tradition, a vocal style rooted in Jamaican sound system culture that threads through everything he has released.
Marley's recording career began with his 1996 debut album, Mr. Marley, which introduced his deejay style to a wider audience. His sophomore effort, Halfway Tree (2001) marked a turning point, earning him a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2002 and establishing his voice as one of the most distinctive in modern reggae. The momentum continued with Welcome to Jamrock in 2005, an album that brought him global recognition and swept the 2006 Grammy Awards with wins for both Best Reggae Album and Best Urban/Alternative Performance, a rare double that underlined the record's crossover power.
Marley has worked alongside some of the most prominent names across genres, with collaborators including Nas, Skrillex, Jay-Z, Bruno Mars, and Mick Jagger. His work with Nas on the joint project Distant Relatives brought together reggae and hip-hop in an exploration of African heritage and cultural connection. The 2017 MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act added international industry recognition to his profile, and Stony Hill (2017) secured a third Grammy for Best Reggae Album at the 2018 ceremony, making Marley one of the most decorated artists in the award's history.
In 2024, Marley released Julian & Damian Marley Live at Summer Stage New York through Passage Productions, a live recording made alongside Julian Marley that documents a performance at one of New York's most storied outdoor concert settings. The release reflects an ongoing commitment to live music and family collaboration, and stands as the most recent entry in a discography that has consistently moved between reggae's roots, dancehall's rhythmic intensity, and the broader textures of hip-hop and reggae fusion.
