Cora Marie, born Cora Nell on 3 January 1953 in Pretoria, was a beloved South African Afrikaans singer known for her warm voice and strong country-music style. After losing her father at a young age, she grew up in a children’s home with her three brothers. Music became her passion early on, and she often took part in talent competitions.
Her stage name, “Cora Marie,” was given to her by the famous singer Virginia Lee, and she later became Cora Myburgh after marrying producer Corrie Myburgh.
Cora Marie began her recording career in 1974 with an Afrikaans version of ABBA’s “Hasta Mañana.” Over the next two decades, she built a powerful career and became one of the leading voices in Afrikaans country music, a style that wasn’t fully accepted at the time. She released around 22 albums, with 14 of them going gold, and her songs became household favourites. One of her most iconic hits is “Gee haar ’n Roos.” She also recorded successful duet albums with the singer Kupido.
In the early 1990s, Cora was diagnosed with cancer, but she continued recording, even releasing a Christian album called "U Wil Sal Geskied" despite her illness. Sadly, she passed away on 8 July 1994, at only 41 years old.
Her legacy lives on through her music, tribute concerts, and a published biography about her life. A popular compilation, 20 Goue Treffers, keeps her greatest hits alive for new generations.
