Collen Ntala Mmotla, stage name Chymamusique, born in Burgersfort, Limpopo, is a South African DJ, producer, sound engineer, and songwriter recognized for his sophisticated contribution to deep house, soulful house, and Afro-electronic music. Raised in Diphale, he began his musical journey as a gospel and jazz pianist during the early 2000s before transitioning into house music production in 2006. His technical approach to arrangement, live instrumentation, and emotionally layered compositions helped distinguish him within South Africa’s evolving electronic music landscape.
After completing his matric in 2007, Chymamusique studied Analytical Chemistry at Tshwane University of Technology and later pursued media studies at Boston College, graduating in 2013. Alongside his academic pursuits, he steadily developed his production identity, releasing early online singles that attracted attention within South Africa’s underground house community. He later founded Chymamusiq Records and collaborated with labels including House Afrika, Soul Candi, and Mofunk Records.
Chymamusique emerged prominently during the 2010s deep-house renaissance, gaining recognition for blending jazz textures, soulful vocals, atmospheric synth work, and percussive African rhythms. His productions often prioritized musicality over commercial formulas, drawing comparisons to internationally respected soulful-house traditions while maintaining a distinctly South African identity. He collaborated with artists such as Rona Ray, Brian Temba, Kaylow, DJ Fresh, and Monique Bingham, while also sharing stages with Vinny Da Vinci, Ralf Gum, Atjazz, and Charles Webster.
His remix of Mi Casa’s “Jika” earned a South African Music Award nomination for Best Remix in 2014, while his debut album "Gift of Sound" won Best New Artist at the Metro FM Music Awards in 2015. Over subsequent years, Chymamusique strengthened his reputation through consistent releases and live performances, earning multiple Limpopo Music Awards and building a loyal following among house music audiences.
The 2017 album "After The Storm" marked a deeply personal turning point in his career. Released after a difficult period involving illness, financial setbacks, and personal struggles, the project reflected themes of resilience, spirituality, and renewal. Interviews from the period described his return as both artistic and personal rebirth, with Chymamusique openly discussing how faith and discipline reshaped his outlook.
In 2021, he released "Musique," a critically acclaimed studio album featuring collaborations with Afrotraction, DJ Tears PLK, Buddynice, and Da Vynalist. The project debuted at number one on South Africa’s iTunes album charts and later won Best Dance Album at the South African Music Awards. Tracks such as “Follow,” “Can You Feel It?” and “Now & Then” reinforced his reputation for emotionally rich, jazz-infused house production rooted in live instrumentation and refined sonic layering.
Beyond music, Chymamusique has also explored entrepreneurship and farming, publicly presenting agriculture as an additional personal and business pursuit outside entertainment.
In 2025, Chymamusique survived a devastating motor vehicle accident near Polokwane that claimed multiple lives, including fellow producer DJ Poizen. Following several surgeries and an extended recovery period, he gradually returned to music production and studio work, an experience widely viewed by supporters and media as another defining chapter in his life story.
