Journey
Loyiso Mangena, popularly known as Chippa, is a South African actor, musician, and business leader. He was born in Johannesburg to Mike “Sporo” Mangena, a former footballer and commentator. Growing up in a family that also ran businesses, Chippa gained early insight into entrepreneurship alongside exposure to public life.
He attended St. John’s College, where his interests in acting and music began to take shape. Chippa became widely known for his role as Chippa Mhlati on the soap opera Backstage, earning recognition including a SAFTA for Best Supporting Actor in 2006 and a Duku Duku Award for Best Male Actor in a Soap in 2002.
Following his success on television, Chippa explored music, collaborating with kwaito artist Mzambiya on the album Undisputed in 2003. He later released his own album, Kliptown to Cape Town, in 2004, blending kwaito and hip-hop sounds and establishing his presence in South Africa’s music scene.
In 2011, Chippa transitioned to the corporate world, joining the Pamodzi Group, a leading black-owned business in South Africa. He advanced to Chief Operations Officer, focusing on strategic operations while gradually reducing his public appearances.
Chippa is admired for his versatility, seamlessly moving between acting, music, and business. While many remember him for Backstage, his career reflects a balance of creativity, discipline, and entrepreneurship, highlighting his impact on both South Africa’s entertainment and business landscapes.
