Chidi Benz, born Rashid Abdallah Mohamed Makwiro in the Ilala district of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is a prominent hip-hop and Bongo Flava artist also known as Chid Benz or King Kong. Raised in Dar es Salaam, he began writing lyrics at a young age, often composing songs after school, and developed his craft as a freestyler in local music contests and community events. After completing his O-level education, his mother strongly supported his decision to pursue music professionally. He gained wider public attention through appearances on the Fiesta Annual Bongo Flava music tour and officially entered Tanzania’s mainstream scene with his 2006 debut single, “Unaniacha Hoi.” He later founded the independent label La Familia and released his self-titled debut album, "Chidi Benz," in 2007 through GMC distributors, which became one of the country’s top-selling hip-hop albums. Known for blending Swahili lyricism with hip-hop and Bongo Flava influences drawn from Tanzanian, Kenyan, and Ugandan sounds, his notable songs include “Chaguo Langu,” “DSM Stand Up,” “Pompom Pishhaah,” “Nalia,” and “Kiboko Yao,” alongside collaborations with Diamond Platnumz, Alikiba, Professor Jay, Ray C, Lady Jaydee, Fid Q, Roma Mkatoliki, Dully Sykes, and Mzee Yussuph. Widely regarded as one of the most creative voices in Swahili hip-hop, his influence extends through La Familia and the broader Dar es Salaam music scene, with performances at major events such as the 2010 Sauti za Busara Festival. Till now, he has remained active, committing to youth advocacy and continued music production, while also pursuing entrepreneurship alongside his artistic career.
