Chax is a South African recording artist who came into the music scene during the late 1990s, a period when Kwaito was rapidly becoming one of the country’s most dominant urban sounds. He is widely recognized for his debut album "Alex 2G" in 1999, a release that placed him firmly within the township-driven wave of Kwaito music that defined that era.
Released on 22 October 1999 through Sony Music Entertainment Africa under exclusive license from 999 Music, "Alex 2G" captured the energy and spirit of late-90s South African youth culture. The album blends mid-tempo, house-inspired rhythms with street-rooted storytelling, reflecting the everyday realities and lifestyle of township life at the time.
The project features tracks such as “Big Man,” “Gides Bhekane,” “Sekushubile,” and “Le Tsona Ditaele,” which highlight themes of identity, resilience, and social experience. It also carries production influences from key figures in the Kwaito movement, helping to root the album in the genre’s foundational sound.
After his debut, Chax continued to develop as an artist, releasing "Shonalanga" in 2001 and other subsequent projects.
