Journey
Ceuzany Gonçalves Pires is a leading light of modern Cape Verdean music, celebrated for a voice that seamlessly bridges the archipelago’s soulful traditions with global contemporary sounds. Born in 1990 in Dakar, Senegal, to parents from Fogo and São Vicente, she moved to the cultural capital of Mindelo at age two. Her childhood was soundtracked by her grandmother’s kitchen serenades, a foundational influence that sparked a lifelong passion for song.
By twelve, Ceuzany was already winning local competitions, eventually honing her stage presence as a teenager performing in island hotels. Her big break arrived in 2007 when Arlindo Évora, leader of the legendary group Cordas do Sol, discovered her performing in Santo Antão. She became the band's female lead, contributing to their most successful era and gaining invaluable international touring experience.
In 2012, she embarked on a solo career with her debut album, Nha Vida, which earned her "Best Female Voice" at the Cape Verde Music Awards. This was followed by the critically acclaimed Ilha d’Melodia (2015), where she explored her personal history through morna and coladeira fused with hip-hop and pop. After a decade of growth and a high-profile 2022 collaboration with French star Christophe Maé on "Pays des merveilles," she released her third album, Nô Tchal Tê Li, in late 2025. This latest work, produced by Hernani Almeida, showcases her artistic maturity, blending her African roots with jazz and indie-pop textures to solidify her status as a versatile global artist.
