As the daughter of Monique Séka, widely recognized as a defining figure in Afro-zouk and French-Ivorian producer Dominique Richard, her path into music reflects both inheritance and reinterpretation. Her early work positions her among a new generation revisiting classic West African sounds while blending them with modern production and cross-continental influences.
Raised between Côte d’Ivoire and France, Carolyna grew up surrounded by music, with early exposure to Afro-zouk, Ivorian classics, and a broad range of African sounds. Her upbringing was closely tied to performance culture through her family’s deep roots in the industry. She is the granddaughter of Seka Okoi, an influential 1970s singer and composer, and the daughter of Monique Séka, widely known as the “Queen of Afro-zouk,” who rose to prominence with songs such as “Okaman.” Her father, Dominique Richard, has worked closely behind the scenes as a producer and manager, further grounding her in the media and entertainment space. Immersed from a young age in classic African recordings, she developed a strong appreciation for traditional composition, lyrical depth, and evolving musical expression.
Her musical influences are strongly rooted in Ivorian female icons, including Nayanka Bell, Chantal Taïba, and Aïcha Koné, as well as artists like Meiway. At the center of these influences is Monique Séka, whose body of work she studied closely from a young age. Carolyna represents a continuation of a multi-generational musical legacy, extending from her grandfather Okoi Séka Athanase through her mother Monique Séka to her own emerging presence.
Carolyna introduced herself to a wider audience through a deliberate artistic decision to revisit a well-known piece from her mother’s catalogue. Her debut single, “Okaman (Remix),” is a contemporary reworking of a 1990s Afro-zouk classic, maintaining the original’s themes of love and resilience while updating its sound with modern Afro-pop production. The track features Jessy Matador, an artist with international visibility following his participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010.
