Brenda Mtambo was born on 3 March 1983, and grew up in KwaMashu, Durban — a community alive with music, spirituality, and resilience. From a young age, she discovered the power of her voice in church, where she learned harmony, leadership, and the emotional depth of song. Music quickly became more than a hobby; it became her calling, a way to express feelings that words alone could not capture.
As a young adult, while pursuing her accounting studies at the then University of Durban-Westville, Brenda auditioned for the renowned gospel ensemble Joyous Celebration. Joining the group marked a pivotal moment in her life. Touring nationally, performing on large stages, and recording with the ensemble honed her craft and exposed her to the discipline and professionalism of the music industry.
After years of growth with Joyous Celebration, Brenda embarked on a solo career, determined to tell her own stories. Her debut album, Inspired (2013), introduced audiences to her voice and introspective songwriting. Subsequent albums, including So Much More (2016) and Sistas (2022), solidified her reputation as an emotive, authentic voice in South African music, blending gospel roots with soul and Afro-contemporary elements.
Brenda’s music resonates for its honesty and emotional depth. She writes from lived experience, exploring themes of resilience, love, womanhood, and healing. Whether performing at festivals, theatre stages, or intimate events, she creates an atmosphere of sincerity and connection, making audiences feel seen and understood through her voice.

In 2024, Brenda received her first South African Music Awards (SAMA) nominations, in three categories: Best African Adult Contemporary Album, Best Engineered Album, and Female Artist of the Year. The same year, she won the Basadi in Music Award for Songwriter of the Year for her song Bhaluyacima, highlighting her skills not only as a vocalist but also as a storyteller and creator.
