Black Rhino, born Nicholaus Haule, is a Tanzanian rapper known for his work in Bongo Flava. Raised in a family where music was already part of everyday life, he grew up observing performances and recording sessions through his older brother, the rapper and former politician Professor Jay. That early exposure influenced his decision to pursue music and develop his own voice as a performer.
He began appearing in Tanzania’s music circles in the 2000s. One of his early notable appearances came in 2006 when he featured on the song “Una” by Professor Jay alongside Mangwea. The collaboration introduced him to wider audiences and placed him among a group of artists who were shaping the direction of Bongo Flava at the time. During the same period he also worked with musicians such as AY, TID, Langa, and Adili, participating in collaborative songs that circulated within Tanzania’s hip-hop community.
After several years of appearances and collaborations, 2015 marked a significant period in his recording career. In July of that year he released a short project titled Black Rhyno Singles, which included four tracks. Later in the same year he issued his debut album Sogea Karibu, a ten-track Bongo Flava project that featured songs such as “Mistari.” The album helped strengthen his identity as a solo artist and expanded his reach among listeners in Tanzania.
He continued building his catalogue with the 2017 album Immami Yaye. The nine-song project incorporated elements of Afro-pop and contemporary Tanzanian sounds while maintaining his rap style. During this period he also released additional singles and collaborated with artists including Hard Mad, Phantom, and Dully Sykes.
Following this run of releases, Black Rhino stepped away from releasing new music for several years. In later interviews he explained that he had remained inactive publicly for more than three years before preparing new material.
His return was announced in 2018 and was followed by the release of the single “Panda Mnazi” in 2019. The track, which featured Kenyan singer T-Touch and Tanzanian rapper Hard Mad, carried an upbeat club feel and signaled his return to recording and performing.
In the years that followed he continued working with other artists in the region. In 2020 he appeared on the song “Kaza,” a release by Professor Jay that also featured DonKoli, Mr. Teacher, and Simple X. He has remained involved in performances and collaborative projects within Tanzania’s music industry.
Outside music, Black Rhino keeps much of his personal life away from public attention. He married his longtime partner, Beatrice Mbaga, in Dar es Salaam on July 1, 2012. He has occasionally addressed the public regarding matters related to his brother Professor Jay, especially during periods when fans sought updates about the artist’s health.
Through albums, singles, and collaborations, Black Rhino has maintained a steady presence in Tanzania’s Bongo Flava movement. His work continues to reach listeners who follow East African hip-hop and contemporary Tanzanian music.
