William Flynn famously known as Bill Flynn was a titan of the South African arts, a performer whose career spanned more than three decades of prolific creativity. Born on December 13, 1948, in Cape Town, he developed into one of the country's most versatile talents. Flynn was equally respected for his intellectual depth in serious theatre and his infectious energy in mainstream comedy.
In the film and theatre world, Flynn’s partnership with playwright Paul Slabolepszy produced some of South Africa’s most enduring cultural touchstones. His role in Saturday Night at the Palace earned him international acclaim, while his comedic persona, Tjokkie, became a household name through films like Running Riot. Despite his success in slapstick, Flynn never lost his dramatic edge, sweeping every major acting award in 2001 for his haunting performance in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman.
Flynn’s artistic spirit extended into music as the charismatic lead singer for Vinnie and the Viscounts and The Rock Rebels. He released several successful albums, including Gooi My A Tenor, and hits like "I Don't Like Cricket, I Love It" and "B.O.K.K.E." He passed away unexpectedly in July 2007, just as he was set to perform on stage.
