Berita, born Gugulethu Khumalo, is a Zimbabwean-born singer, songwriter, guitarist, and music producer known for her soulful blend of Afro-soul, Afro-pop, and contemporary African sounds. She was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and later moved between Zimbabwe, New Zealand, and South Africa, where she eventually established her music career.
She rose to prominence after moving to South Africa and releasing her breakout single “Thandolwethu”, which introduced her emotive vocal style and guitar-driven sound to a wider audience. Her debut album, "Conquering Spirit," in 2013 established her as one of the standout voices in modern African soul music and achieved commercial success.
Berita followed up with several acclaimed releases, including "Songs of Empowerment" in 2014, "Berita" in 2017, and "Songs in the Key of Love" in 2020, each showcasing her evolution as a songwriter and producer. Her music often explores themes of love, identity, resilience, and empowerment, delivered through a warm, acoustic-rich sound.
Beyond recording, she is also the founder of Assali Music, an independent label through which she manages her creative output and supports artistic ownership. She has collaborated with several leading African musicians and is recognized for her live performances, often featuring guitar-led arrangements.
Berita continues to be regarded as one of the key contemporary Afro-soul artists contributing to the global visibility of African acoustic and soul-inspired music.
