Journey
Born Benson Mutua in Embu County, Kenya, Bensoul is a Kenyan singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer whose music spans Afro-pop, Afro-fusion, soul, R&B, and folk. Raised in a musical environment, he developed an early interest in singing and playing guitar before moving to Nairobi, where he built his reputation as a live performer, songwriter, and session musician. Bensoul primarily records in Swahili and English, occasionally incorporating Sheng into his lyrics.
His career reached a turning point when he signed with Sol Generation Records, the label founded by Sauti Sol. His debut single, "Lucy," introduced audiences to his heartfelt songwriting and expressive vocal style. He followed with releases including "Favorite Song," "Forget You," "Nairobi," "Extra Pressure," "Doorstep," "Kautamu Flani," and "Navutishwa," steadily establishing himself as one of Kenya's leading contemporary artists.
In 2021, Bensoul released his debut album, "Lion of Sudah," a project that highlighted his versatility as both a vocalist and songwriter. The album received critical acclaim and further strengthened his position within East Africa's music scene. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with Sauti Sol, Bien, Savara, Nviiri the Storyteller, and Fancy Fingers, contributing to a growing catalog that reflects Kenya's evolving contemporary sound.
Beyond recording, Bensoul has earned recognition for his live performances at major concerts and festivals across East Africa. His work with Sol Generation introduced him to a wider international audience and helped establish him as one of the label's standout artists. Following his departure from the label in 2023, he continued his career independently, expanding his creative direction while maintaining a consistent release schedule.
Bensoul's songwriting often explores love, personal growth, family, and everyday experiences, delivered through warm melodies and acoustic instrumentation. His ability to move comfortably between soulful ballads and contemporary Afro-pop has made him a respected figure in Kenyan music. As an independent artist, he continues to release new music, perform internationally, and collaborate with musicians across Africa, building a career defined by authenticity, musical craftsmanship, and a commitment to telling relatable stories through song.
