Benjamin Ball, born Benjamin Msane in Durban, is a seminal figure in South African synth-disco and reggae. He rose to national stardom in 1984 with the infectious anthem "Flash a Flashlight," a track that bridged racial divides and defined the "bubblegum" music era. His debut album, Paulina, achieved gold status, cementing his reputation for blending American-style disco-funk with international reggae sensibilities.
Following a transition into roots reggae under the alias Bhingi B, Ball took a transformative hiatus to train as a sangoma, finding spiritual renewal in the "bushes" before returning to his craft. Today, his resurgence is celebrated through the EPs “Coming Out Of The Bushes,” and “Kabadzeene,” alongside the classic Flash a Flashlight - EP. Now based in KwaZulu-Natal, Ball remains an enduring icon of South African soul, his intricate grooves continuing to resonate with global audiences through digital archives.
