Ayanda Nhlangothi is a renowned South African singer, composer, actress, and social activist from the esteemed Nokwe musical dynasty. Singing in English and Zulu and proficient in Xhosa, her career began at age 10 when she voiced young Simba in the Zulu version of The Lion King. Her musical pedigree comes from her family, including her grandfather Alfred Nokwe, her mother Marilyn Nokwe of Mango Groove, and her aunt Tu Nokwe, all of whom guided her artistic development.
Nhlangothi gained widespread recognition in 2002 as a finalist and standout performer on the first season of Idols SA, where she was dubbed 'The Class' of the competition and "The Voice of a Nation". Following her time on Idols, she released her debut album, "Music2me - Um ngoma," in 2007, showcasing her versatility by blending traditional Zulu folk music with jazz, reggae, and gospel.
Her talent extends to the stage, with lead roles in various theatre productions both in South Africa and internationally. Notable appearances include performances in New York's Off-Broadway production of Drumstruck and the British musical Boogie Nights. A strong social consciousness, inherited from her family, drives her work. She teaches life skills at the Amajika Arts & Life Centre and uses music and storytelling to empower others. Her children, the musical trio Biko's Manna, are carrying on the family's artistic legacy. Nhlangothi continues to be a vibrant force in the arts, serving as an ambassador for her culture.
