Avante is a South African gospel group formed in the early 1990s in KwaMashu, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Established to present gospel music rooted in church traditions and township performance culture, early development was shaped by church choirs and discipline among founding members.
Discovered in 1993 by theatre and music figure Mbongeni Ngema, they gained wider recognition. Their debut album, "Sinethemba" (1997), introduced them to the South African gospel space and began a recording career spanning decades. The project focused on faith, endurance, and everyday struggles, delivered through group harmonies and live performance. Avante released "Qina" and "Uhambo," with "Qina" achieving platinum status. The group included Linda Gcwensa, Lucky Cele, James Langa, Bongani Ngcobo, and Siphiwe Khanyile.
Over the years, they experienced member losses, leading to restructuring and reduced activity. Avante maintained its identity built on gospel performance and harmony structure, with new members, while preserving its original direction intact.
