Sello Arthur Mafokate, popularly known as Arthur Mafokate, is a South African singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, and television personality. Born on 10 July 1969 in Soweto, Gauteng, he is widely regarded as one of the founding figures of Kwaito, a genre that emerged in South Africa during the early years of democracy. His influence on the development and growth of South African urban music has earned him the title “King of Kwaito.”
Arthur developed a passion for music and performance at a young age. Before launching his solo career, he gained experience as a dancer, sound engineer, model, and member of various music groups. His early exposure to different aspects of the entertainment industry helped him develop the skills that would later contribute to his success as a performer and producer.
His breakthrough arrived in the mid-1990s with songs such as "Amagents Ayaphanda," "Kaffir," "Die Poppe Sal Dans," and "Oyi Oyi." These releases became major hits and played an important role in establishing Kwaito as one of South Africa’s most popular music genres. His energetic performances, street-inspired lyrics, and innovative sound helped him connect with audiences across the country.
Beyond his success as a recording artist, Arthur founded 999 Music, one of South Africa’s most influential independent record labels.
