The story of Ali Katt (born Albert Moroatshehla in 1958) is a testament to the power of South African township soul. Growing up in Tembisa, Moroatshehla developed a vocal style that bridged the gap between traditional melodies and the synthesized pop sounds that dominated the 1980s. Under the stage name Ali Katt, he rose to prominence as a leading figure in the Bubblegum genre, a style characterized by its infectious hooks and danceable beats.
His 1987 album, “Have Mercy,” featured his signature hit "Let The Good Times Roll," which became an enduring classic and earned him massive popularity across racial and geographic divides. His smooth, charismatic delivery made him a favorite on the national airwaves, and he followed his initial success with hits like "Liar" and "I Still Love You."
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ali Katt successfully bridged the gap to the next generation by collaborating with kwaito legends, most notably on the track "Meketeng" with Kabelo. However, his later life was marked by hardship; after suffering a stroke in 2014, he struggled with ill health and the lack of financial security common among veteran artists. He passed away on July 15, 2018, at the age of 60. Today, Ali Katt is remembered not just for his hits, but as a cultural icon who brought joy to millions.
