Journey
AKA, born Kiernan Jarryd Forbes on 28 January 1988 in Cape Town, South Africa, grew into one of the most influential figures in South African hip-hop, shaping how the genre was heard, marketed, and consumed in the country. His early years were spent in Johannesburg, where his interest in music developed during his school years. He first entered the industry in the early 2000s as a member of the rap group Entity, which gave him his first exposure to recording and performance environments. After the group phase, he explored music production and gradually transitioned into a solo career, refining his sound and identity.
His rise as a solo artist became clear with the release of “Victory Lap,” a track that opened the door to wider recognition and set the foundation for his debut studio album “Altar Ego” in 2011. That project marked a turning point, positioning him as a leading voice in contemporary South African rap. He followed it with “Levels” in 2014, a project that further established his commercial success and lyrical confidence. In 2018, he released “Touch My Blood,” which expanded his audience and strengthened his presence in mainstream music culture. His final studio album, “Mass Country,” released in 2023, carried added emotional weight and reflected his continued relevance in the industry.
Beyond his own recordings, AKA also worked closely in production roles and business ventures, shaping his career into more than just performance. He collaborated with artists across Africa and beyond, helping connect South African hip-hop to wider international audiences. His stage presence, public persona, and consistency earned him the nickname “Supa Mega,” a reflection of his larger-than-life image in entertainment spaces.
Throughout his career, he remained a highly visible figure in South African pop culture, influencing younger artists and contributing to the growth of hip-hop as a dominant genre in the country. His life was tragically cut short on 10 February 2023 in Durban, when he was shot and killed at the age of 35, leaving behind a significant body of work and a lasting impact on African music history.
