A Pass, born Alexander Bagonza in Mengo, Kampala, Uganda, is a singer-songwriter, producer, and one of East Africa’s most versatile contemporary artists. He is widely recognized for shaping modern Ugandan Afro-dancehall by blending reggae, dancehall, Afrobeat, R&B, and Afro-soul into a distinctive, witty, and melodically rich style.
He began developing his musical talent in church and school, later refining it during his secondary education before entering professional recording spaces in the early 2000s. His breakthrough came around 2011, after gaining industry support from producers and video directors who helped him access major studios and visibility in Uganda’s evolving music scene.
A Pass rose to prominence with hits such as “Tuli Kubigere,” “Wuuyo,” and “Nyenya Omugongo,” the latter becoming widely recognized in East African pop culture. His songwriting skills have also made him a sought-after collaborator for other artists across Uganda and beyond.
He has released several albums, including "Nva Kampala" (2016), "African Yayo" (2018), and "Bagonza" (2024), alongside numerous singles and collaborative works.
Beyond performance, A Pass is respected as a songwriter, creative thinker, and cultural voice who uses humor, storytelling, and social commentary to connect with audiences. His influence continues to grow as he pushes Ugandan music toward broader international recognition.
